Bill Brandt was born in Hamburg on May 2, 1904 to an English father and a German mother. Bill Brandt probably took up photography when he was a patient undergoing treatment for tuberculosis in Davos, Switzerland in the 1920s. Brandt then assisted Man Ray in Paris for several months in 1930 where he witnessed the heyday of Surrealist film and grasped photography. Night photography became one of Brandt's specialities and this may be his earliest experiment in the genre. The majority of Brandt's earliest English photographs were first published in Brandt’s The English at Home (1936).
Our group chose Bill Brandt because he is an amazing photographer and his portraits are very unique and awoke our interest in his style. His portraits are very different from others and that made us want to learn more about him and that is the reason why we chose his style for our masters photo assignment. For our assignment we took photos of each other and tried to use his techniques.....
